The richest in flora and fauna of the applicable habitat in all of Ethiopia, the bale mountains provides a unique diversity of landscape, vegetation and fauna.

The park is divided by the Harenna cliff which runs through it like a fracture from east to west, creating three clearly-differentiated areas within the reserve.

The northern part of the park is the best place to see the beautiful and endangered endemic mountain Nyala (dega agazain in Amharic), which is a large antelope. They live on mountain forests, especially on high altitude meadows.

The central part of the park area is the best place to see the semien or Ethiopian Wolf (key Kebero) a mammal shaped between a wolf and a jackal with long legs, a sharp snout and a very thick black and white tail and can only be found in high altitude prairies of the bale and simein massifs.

Primates appear throughout all three parts of the parks, balck and white colored monkeys, baboons, and vervet monkeys.
