It has been said that Ethiopian history begins with Axum and its kingdom was most prosperous probably from the fourth or fifth century B.C.Part of the Axumite history is artistically inscribed in the famous stelae and slabs of Axum.

Over 300 slabs, stetae and monolithic obelisks can be found in Axum and have been inspiring awe in visitors for centuries. Although it is difficult to date many of these monuments exactly, evidence indicates that the best examples, the seven giant obelisks may date back to the 4th century.

Of the seven great obelisks only one remains standing with a height of 21 meters (70feet) and is carved on three of its four faces. The biggest obelisk at axum lies broken on the ground and is the largest monolithic monument in the world, measuring approximately 33 meters(110feet) and weighing around 600 tons.
